Lord Vaman is known as the fifth avatar in the ten avatars of Lord Vishnu. The Vaman avatar is considered to be the most sacred and spiritual form of Lord Vishnu. The word “Vaman” means small or dwarf Brahmin form, hence Lord Vaman is depicted as a small Brahmin boy.

The story of the donation of three steps of land
Once, the Daitya king Bali was organizing the Ashwamedha Yajna. At that time, Lord Vamana arrived at his Yajna Sabha in the form of a small Brahmin boy. Seeing Lord Vamana, King Bali respected him and requested him to ask for the desired donation.
Lord Vamana asked for only three steps of land as a donation. Daityaguru Shukracharya warned King Bali that this was no ordinary boy, but Lord Vishnu. Nevertheless, King Bali resolved to keep his promise and give the donation.
Trivikram form and the testing time of sacrifice
As soon as the donation was resolved, Lord Vamana assumed the gigantic Trivikram form. The Lord measured the entire earth with his first step and the heaven with his second step.
When there was no space left for the third step, King Bali humbly offered his head. Lord Vamana was pleased with King Bali's truthfulness, generosity and commitment and blessed him.
Tradition of Onam and Mahabali
In South India, especially in Kerala, the Daitya King Bali is worshipped as Mahabali. It is believed that Lord Vishnu allowed him to meet his people once a year.
