Vamana Jayanti

Festival Introduction:

Vamana Jayanti is celebrated on the twelfth day of the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) of Bhadrapada month. It commemorates the fifth incarnation of Lord Vishnu in the form of a dwarf Brahmin named Vamana. The day signifies the victory of humility and devotion over ego and pride.

Story & Traditions:

The Tale of Vamana and King Bali:
According to the Bhagavata Purana, the demon king Bali had grown mighty and was ruling the three worlds. To curb his pride and restore cosmic balance, Lord Vishnu took the form of a small Brahmin boy, Vamana. When Bali was performing a grand yajna, Vamana appeared and asked for just three steps of land. Upon accepting, Vamana expanded into his gigantic Trivikrama form, covering heaven and earth in two steps. With nowhere left, Bali offered his own head for the third step. Pleased by this devotion, Vishnu blessed Bali to return once a year — this day is remembered as Bali Pratipada in some traditions.
