What is today's tithi?
According to the Hindu Panchang, today's tithi is Sud Dvadasi. It continues till 10:22 PM, after which Sud Trayodasi begins. Tithi is determined by the moon's motion - a lunar month has 30 tithis, fifteen each in Shukla Paksha (waxing moon) and Krishna Paksha (waning moon). Tithi can change during the day, so city-based calculation is essential. See the full day's detail on the calendar page.
Today's Nakshatra - which nakshatra is running now?
Currently Vishakha nakshatra is active. After 07:15 PM, Anuradha nakshatra begins. Hindu astrology recognises 27 nakshatras, each lasting roughly one day. Nakshatra carries special significance for muhurat, travel, and important tasks - some are considered favourable for auspicious work, others call for caution.
Today's Vaar (weekday)
Today is Friday. In Vedic tradition each weekday is associated with a planet - Sunday with the Sun, Monday with the Moon, Tuesday with Mars, Wednesday with Mercury, Thursday with Jupiter, Friday with Venus, and Saturday with Saturn. The planet determines the day's auspicious colour and suitable activities. For muhurat, read the vaar together with the tithi and nakshatra.
Today's Rahu Kaal - when is Rahu Kaal today?
Today's Rahu Kaal is from 11:02 AM to 12:42 PM. Rahu Kaal is calculated by dividing the time between sunrise and sunset into eight equal parts - one of those parts, determined by the weekday, is Rahu Kaal. The tradition advises avoiding new ventures, travel, and important decisions during this period. For hour-by-hour auspicious and inauspicious timings, check the Choghadiya.
Today's Festival or Vrat
Today is Vatsavitri Vrat Arambh. Upcoming vrats, festivals, and Ekadashi dates can be found on the Hindu festivals page. View Purnima, Amavasya, and Sankranti for the full year on the Hindu calendar. A separate page is available for the daily horoscope.
How is today? - Shubh Muhurat and Auspicious Colour
The auspiciousness of the day is determined by the combination of tithi, vaar, and nakshatra. Abhijit Muhurat (12:15 PM to 01:09 PM) is considered the best time of the day - work begun in this window is believed to succeed. Wearing the day's auspicious colour and avoiding important tasks during Rahu Kaal are simple rules that help in everyday decisions. For detailed muhurat, see the Muhurat and Choghadiya pages.
Today's Shubh and Ashubh Time
Shubh time: Today's most auspicious window is Abhijit Muhurat (12:15 PM to 01:09 PM) - best for new work, puja, and important decisions. Today's auspicious colour (shubh rang) is White. Ashubh time: Rahu Kaal (11:02 AM - 12:42 PM), Gulika Kaal (07:40 AM - 09:21 AM), and Yamaganda (04:03 PM - 05:44 PM) are considered inauspicious - avoid starting new ventures during these. Vishti (Bhadra) karan is also avoided for auspicious tasks. For hour-by-hour good and bad timings, see the Choghadiya.
The Five Limbs of Panchang
The word "Panchang" comes from the Sanskrit pancha (five) and anga (limb). The five limbs are: Tithi (lunar day), Vaar (weekday), Nakshatra (moon's position), Yoga (combined angle of Sun and Moon), and Karan (half a tithi). Reading all five together determines the auspiciousness of any given day, the appropriate activities, and the muhurat. Today's Yoga is Siddha and Karan is Balava.
Our Calculation Method - Drik Ganit
All calculations on Shubh Panchang are based on the Drik Ganit (observational astronomy) method - meaning they follow the actual (observed) positions of the planets. Calculations consider local sunrise and sunset, lunar longitude, solar longitude, Tithi, Nakshatra, Yoga and Karana, all built on the Surya Siddhanta and modern astronomical data for the precise latitude, longitude, and time zone of your selected city. Because these values depend on location, Panchang timings may vary from city to city - this is not an error but local accuracy.
Shubh Panchang's Approach - Guidance, Not Fear
The purpose of Panchang is not to control life, but to understand the nature of time and make better decisions. Avoiding Rahu Kaal is a precaution, not a fear. Beginning work in Shubh Muhurat is a tradition that steadies the mind and strengthens confidence. Shubh Panchang is built with this spirit - for curiosity and guidance.
Reference Texts
The calculation method of Shubh Panchang is based on these classical texts: Surya Siddhanta (ancient astronomical mathematics), Muhurta Chintamani (auspicious muhurat analysis), Brihat Samhita (Varahamihira), Dharmasindhu, and Nirnayasindhu (vrat and festival determination). These texts form the foundation of the Hindu Panchang tradition.
