What Is Janam Rashi?

Janam Rashi is the Moon sign calculated from your birth chart in Vedic (sidereal) astrology. According to the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, the classical root text of Vedic astrology, the Moon governs the mind (manas), and its zodiac placement at birth defines a person's emotional nature far more precisely than the Sun sign used in Western astrology.

Because the Moon moves roughly 13° per day, it changes Rashi every 2-2.5 days. Two people born on the same date can have different Rashis if born hours apart - this is why a Rashi calculator needs an exact birth time, not just a birth date.

How Shubh Panchang Calculates Your Rashi

This calculator uses the sidereal zodiac with Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsha, the ayanamsha adopted by the Indian government's Calendar Reform Committee and used by most Panchang publishers. The calculation pipeline is:

• Input: birth date, time, and place (latitude/longitude derived from the city you enter).
• Ephemeris: precise Moon longitude at birth instant, corrected for your local timezone.
• Ayanamsha correction: Lahiri value subtracted from the tropical longitude to get the sidereal (Nirayana) position.
• Rashi mapping: the resulting degree is divided by 30° to identify which of the 12 Rashis the Moon falls in.

Janam Rashi vs Sun Sign: What's the Difference?

A Sun sign (used in Western astrology magazines) is based on where the Sun was at your birth - it stays fixed for roughly a month at a time and is easy to guess from your birth date alone. A Janam Rashi is based on the Moon and can change within days, so it needs an exact birth time and the sidereal zodiac correction described above.

Vedic astrology treats Rashi as the primary indicator of mind and temperament, while the Sun sign (called Surya Rashi) is used mainly for solar-return predictions. Most Indian astrology services - Rashifal, Kundali matching, gemstone suggestions - are built on the Moon-based Rashi, not the Sun sign.
