About Choghadiya:
Choghadiya, also spelled Choghadia or Chaughadia, is a time-tested method in Hindu astrology used to find the most auspicious work timings during the day and night. This traditional system plays an important role in daily life, especially when planning events like travel, business, or ceremonies.
Originally used to pick favorable travel muhurthas, Choghadiya Muhurat is now widely used for all types of auspicious work due to its simplicity and accuracy. Rooted in ancient Vedic astrology, it divides the entire 24 hours of a day into specific time segments known as Choghadiyas. The day is divided into two main parts: from sunrise to sunset (Day Choghadiya) and from sunset to sunrise (Night Choghadiya).
Meaning of the Word "Choghadiya"
The word Choghadiya originates from the traditional Hindu system of timekeeping. In this method, a day—from sunrise to sunset—is divided into 30 Ghatis (roughly 24 hours = 60 Ghatis). For Choghadiya Muhurat, these 30 Ghatis are further split into eight equal parts, giving us eight Choghadiyas for the day and another eight for the night.
Each Choghadiya Muhurat is approximately 90 minutes long. The term "Choghadiya" comes from the Sanskrit components:
- "Cho" or "Chau", meaning four
- "Ghadiya" or Ghati, a traditional unit of time
Hence, Choghadiya literally means "four Ghatis" or roughly 90 minutes, and is also referred to as Chaturshtika Muhurta.
Types of Choghadiya
In a full 24-hour cycle, there are 16 Choghadiya Muhurats—8 during the day and 8 during the night. These are categorized based on the planetary ruler and their nature (Auspicious, Inauspicious, or Neutral):
🟢 Auspicious Choghadiya: These are best suited for all auspicious work, including ceremonies, business dealings, and travel:
- Amrit (Highly Auspicious) – Ruled by the Moon, this period is ideal for success, prosperity, and religious acts. It is one of the best shubh choghadiya according to Hindu astrology.
- Shubh (Auspicious) – Ruled by Jupiter, great for beginning new ventures, travel, or special events.
- Labh (Profitable) – Ruled by Mercury, best for financial activities, investment, and trade.
⚫ Neutral Choghadiya:
- Chal (Neutral to Favorable) – Ruled by Venus, suitable for general activities like movement, travel, or initiating new plans.
🟠 Inauspicious Choghadiya: Avoid these periods for major decisions or starting important work:
- Udveg (Tension & Problems) – Ruled by the Sun, may bring stress or conflict.
- Rog (Illness & Obstacles) – Ruled by Mars, associated with health issues and hurdles.
- Kaal (Loss & Struggles) – Ruled by Saturn, considered highly inauspicious for any new beginning.

This page shows today's Choghadiya muhurat for your location, along with a complete guide to understanding each Choghadiya period. Choghadiya is a popular Vedic time-selection method used to find auspicious (shubh) and inauspicious time slots during the day and night, helping you start important work, travel, business, or puja at the right moment.
What is Choghadiya?
Choghadiya (also spelled chogadiya or ચોઘડિયું) divides each day and night into eight time periods. Each period lasts roughly 90 minutes and is ruled by a planet that makes the slot favourable or unfavourable. Instead of casting a full horoscope, Choghadiya gives a quick, practical way to pick a shubh muhurat for everyday tasks.
The 7 Choghadiya periods explained
There are seven Choghadiya types. Three are auspicious, three are inauspicious, and one is neutral:
- Amrit – the most auspicious; excellent for any new or important work.
- Shubh – auspicious; good for marriage, ceremonies, and religious work.
- Labh – auspicious; ideal for business, starting education, and earning gains.
- Char – neutral/movable; suitable for travel and routine activities.
- Rog – inauspicious; avoid; linked to illness and conflict.
- Kaal – inauspicious; avoid for new beginnings; good only for accumulating wealth as per some traditions.
- Udveg – inauspicious; causes anxiety and obstacles; best avoided.
Shubh Choghadiya – the auspicious time periods
Amrit, Shubh, and Labh together form the shubh Choghadiya. When you need a quick auspicious window for travel, signing a deal, buying gold, or beginning a new venture, choose one of these periods. Amrit is the strongest, followed by Shubh and Labh. Char can also be used when no shubh period is available, especially for travel.
Day Choghadiya vs Night Choghadiya
Choghadiya is calculated from sunrise to sunset (day Choghadiya) and from sunset to the next sunrise (night Choghadiya). The day is split into eight equal parts and the night into eight more. The first period of the day depends on the weekday — for example, Sunday's day Choghadiya starts with Udveg, Monday with Amrit, and so on. Because period lengths follow the actual sunrise and sunset, the Choghadiya timings change with your city and date.
Choghadiya Muhurat – choosing the right timing
A Choghadiya muhurat is simply the auspicious slot you select for a specific task. Use Amrit or Shubh for ceremonies and puja, Labh for business and money matters, and Char for journeys. For major life events such as weddings or property registration, combine Choghadiya with a fuller muhurat check — see our muhurat tools and the daily panchang for tithi, nakshatra, and rahu kaal before finalising.
