Introduction to Lord Parashurama

Lord Parashurama is known as the sixth avatar of Lord Vishnu in the ten incarnations. He is considered to be the auspicious avatar of Lord Vishnu and is famous for his power, penance and protection of religion. Lord Parashurama was born on the third day of the Shukla Paksha of the month of Vaishakh, which is celebrated as Parashurama Jayanti. His childhood name was “Rama”, but after receiving the divine weapon named Parashu from Lord Shiva, he became famous all over the world as “Parashurama”.

Lord Parashuram was an ascetic and a warrior since childhood. He received education in the ashram of Maharishi Vishwamitra and Rishi Richika. After that, by worshipping Lord Shiva rigorously, he attained proficiency in weaponry.

Lord Shiva was pleased with his penance and blessed him with the divine Parshu, bow and many powerful weapons. Parashuramji is also considered as the supreme disciple of Lord Shiva.

The story of Sahasrarjuna and Kamadhenu

Once a powerful king named Sahasrarjuna came to the ashram of Maharishi Jamadagni. The sage had a cow named Kamadhenu, which was given as a gift to the gods, which provided desired food and wealth.

Seeing the divine power of Kamadhenu, Sahasrarjuna became greedy and forcibly stole the cow. When Lord Parashurama came to know about this incident, he fought a fierce battle with Sahasrarjuna and killed him.

Vow to destroy the Kshatriyas

The sons of Sahasrarjuna killed Maharishi Jamadagni to take revenge. Hearing the news of his father's murder, Lord Parashurama became extremely angry.

He vowed to destroy the arrogant and unrighteous Kshatriyas from the earth. It is said that Parashuramaji destroyed the evil Kshatriya powers from the earth twenty-one times and re-established religion.

Lord Parashurama and the Mahabharata

Lord Parashurama was not only a warrior, but also known as the best guru. He taught the knowledge of weaponry to great warriors like Bhishma, Dronacharya and Karna.

Karna learned weaponry from Parashuramaji by hiding his identity. When Parashuramaji realized the truth, he cursed Karna that he would forget the knowledge he had learned at the most important time of his life.

According to one incident, Lord Parashurama reached Kailash to have darshan of Lord Shiva. At that time, Lord Ganesha stopped him from entering.

In anger, Parashuramji struck with his spear, due to which one of Lord Ganesha's teeth was broken. Since then, Lord Ganesha has become famous as "Ekdant".

Lord Parashuram is usually depicted in the form of an ascetic warrior. He holds a spear in one hand and a bow in the other.
