Overview:
Parshuram Jayanti is an important Hindu festival celebrated as the birth anniversary of Lord Parshuram, the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. It falls on the Tritiya (third day) of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Vaishakh, which is also celebrated as Akshaya Tritiya—a highly auspicious and sacred day.
The Legend Behind the Festival:
Lord Parshuram was born to Sage Jamadagni and Mother Renuka and belonged to the Bhrigu lineage. Though born as a Brahmin, he followed the dharma of a warrior (Kshatriya). His original name was "Ram", but he came to be known as "Parshuram" after receiving a divine axe (Parshu) from Lord Shiva.
One of the most well-known legends tells of King Kartavirya Arjuna forcibly taking away the divine cow Kamadhenu from Sage Jamadagni. In retaliation, Parshuram defeated the king and retrieved the cow. Later, the king’s sons killed Jamadagni. Enraged, Parshuram vowed to rid the Earth of corrupt and unjust Kshatriyas—and is believed to have done so 21 times.
