Introduction to Lord Dhanvantari

According to the Shrimad Bhagavat Mahapuran, the gods and demons were ready to churn the ocean of milk to obtain nectar. The ocean was started by making the Mandarachal mountain a churner and the Vasuki serpent a rope. During the ocean churning, many divine gems, gods and goddesses and miraculous things appeared.
The first was the Halahal poison, which Lord Shiva drank and protected the universe. Then Kamadhenu, Airavata, Kaustubh Mani, Kalpavriksha and Goddess Lakshmi appeared. Finally, a divine and radiant man emerged from the ocean, who had a kalash filled with nectar in his hand. He was Lord Dhanvantari, who was known as the Anshaavatar of Lord Vishnu.
Lord Dhanvantari gave nectar to the gods and provided mankind with the knowledge of Ayurveda and medicine. That is why he is worshipped as the presiding deity of medicine and health.
Relationship between Dhanvantari and Ayurveda

Lord Dhanvantari is usually depicted in a quadrilateral form. He wears a pitambar and is depicted seated on a lotus. His four arms are adorned with a conch, a chakra, herbs and an amrit kalash.
In some paintings, he is shown holding herbs in one hand and an amrit kalash in the other. The light of health, peace and vitality radiates from his divine form.

In the Vayu Purana, King Dirghatapas is described as the father of Lord Dhanvantari. In some texts, his name is also known as Dirghatamas. Goddess Arogyalakshmi is considered to be the half-consort of Lord Dhanvantari.
