Diwali

Introduction to the Festival:

Deepavali, also known as Diwali or Deepotsav, is one of the most prominent festivals in the Hindu religion. It is celebrated on the Amavasya (new moon) day of the Kartika month and symbolizes the victory of light over darkness. On this day, homes, temples, and public places are illuminated with lamps, spreading joy and light throughout the atmosphere. Deepavali is a five-day festival, which includes Dhanteras, Narak Chaturdashi, Diwali, Govardhan Puja, and Bhai Dooj.

The Story Behind Deepavali:

The history of Deepavali is connected to the Ramayana. It is believed that Lord Rama, after rescuing Mother Sita from the captivity of Ravana, and after her agni-pariksha (trial by fire), returned to Ayodhya after completing 14 years of exile. The people of Ayodhya, to welcome Lord Rama, Mother Sita, and Laxman, illuminated the entire city with lamps. Since then, Deepavali, the festival of lights, has been celebrated.

Why We Celebrate This Festival:

Deepavali signifies the victory of good over evil, light over darkness, and the attainment of knowledge. On this day, people worship Goddess Lakshmi, seeking wealth, prosperity, and peace. It also promotes self-purification, social harmony, and family unity.

Key Traditions of Deepavali:

Lighting Lamps (Deepak): Homes, temples, and public spaces are illuminated with oil lamps (diyas).

Lakshmi Puja: In the evening, worship of Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Ganesha, and Kuber is performed.

Cleaning and Decoration: Homes are cleaned and decorated with rangoli, flowers, and lamps.

Sweets and Gifts: Sweets and gifts are exchanged among family and friends.

Fireworks: Children and youth enjoy bursting fireworks during the celebrations.

Significance of the Festival:

Deepavali holds immense religious and spiritual significance. It also plays an important role in promoting social and cultural unity. The festival strengthens the bond of love, brotherhood, and cooperation among people. Through Deepavali, we welcome light, positivity, and prosperity into our lives.
