World Environment Day

Introduction
World Environment Day is celebrated every year on June 5th. It is the United Nations’ principal vehicle for encouraging awareness and action for the protection of the environment.

History and Background
World Environment Day was established in 1972 following the UN Conference on the Human Environment in Stockholm. The first celebration was held in 1974, and since then, it has become a global platform for environmental outreach.

Purpose and Significance
The day aims to raise awareness about environmental issues like pollution, deforestation, climate change, and encourage individual and collective efforts to preserve nature. It reminds us of our responsibility toward the Earth.

Annual Themes
Each year, the day is celebrated with a specific theme — such as "Beat Plastic Pollution", "Only One Earth", or "Ecosystem Restoration". These themes focus on critical environmental challenges and inspire targeted action.

Celebrations and Activities
Various activities are organized worldwide, including tree plantation drives, awareness campaigns, art and essay competitions, clean-up drives, workshops, and eco-friendly initiatives by schools, NGOs, and governments.

Inspiring Message
World Environment Day calls on every individual to take action. Whether it's reducing plastic use, planting a tree, or conserving water — every step counts toward a greener planet.
