World Blood Donation Day

Introduction
World Blood Donation Day is observed every year on June 14 to raise awareness about the need for safe blood and to thank voluntary, unpaid blood donors for their life-saving gifts of blood.

Date and Background
June 14 marks the birth anniversary of Karl Landsteiner, an Austrian scientist who discovered the ABO blood group system. His groundbreaking research laid the foundation for modern blood transfusion safety. In his honor, this day was designated to promote voluntary blood donation.

Importance of Blood Donation
Every year, millions of people require blood transfusions due to surgeries, trauma, anemia, cancer treatments, and chronic illnesses. Just one unit of donated blood can save up to three lives. A healthy person can donate blood every 3 months safely.

Humanitarian and Compassionate Act
Blood donation is a noble act that transcends boundaries of caste, religion, or nationality. It is a universal symbol of empathy and kindness toward fellow humans.

Campaigns and Celebrations
On this day, global health organizations, hospitals, and NGOs organize blood donation drives, awareness programs, and educational sessions. Donors are encouraged, and the general public is informed about the safety and benefits of donating blood.
