Makar Sankranti

Makar Sankranti

Makar Sankranti is one of the major festivals of Hinduism, celebrated annually on January 14th. On this day, the Sun God enters the Capricorn zodiac sign, a transition known as "Surya Sankranti." This marks the end of winter and the beginning of summer, symbolizing a period of positive transformation. Makar Sankranti is considered the start of the auspicious period known as Uttarayan, which is believed to be extremely sacred.

The Legend Behind the Festival

According to one story, the great warrior Bhishma Pitamah from the Mahabharata chose to leave his body on Makar Sankranti day, as this moment was considered the most auspicious for attaining heaven and moksha (liberation). Another belief states that on this day, the Sun God visits his son Saturn, who rules over the Capricorn zodiac. This legend represents the bond between father and son, symbolizing mutual understanding and respect.

Why We Celebrate Makar Sankranti

Makar Sankranti is a symbol of positive energy, new beginnings, and gratitude. It is especially significant for farmers as it marks the harvest time for new crops. People celebrate the day as a way to express gratitude for prosperity, health, and spiritual growth, thanking the Sun God for his blessings.

Main Traditions of Makar Sankranti

On this day, people eat and share delicacies made from sesame and jaggery, symbolizing sweetness and harmony. Many bathe in sacred rivers, which is believed to wash away sins. The tradition of flying kites is especially popular in Gujarat and Rajasthan. People also perform rituals at home, offering prayers to the Sun God and dedicating a ritual offering called "Arghya."
