Introduction to Maharaj Prithu
Maharaj Prithu is a special one among the 24 divine incarnations of Lord Vishnu described in the Shrimad Bhagavat Mahapuran. Lord Vishnu, assuming the form of Prithu, established religion, justice and prosperity on earth. In Hindu tradition, Maharaj Prithu is considered the first king and ideal ruler of the earth. He showed the path of orderly life, agriculture, urban planning and state religion to human society.
According to mythological beliefs, Maharaj Prithu made the earth flat and created a system of villages, cities, agriculture and residence for the people. Due to this, he is known as the first organized ruler of human civilization. During his rule, the people were happy, prosperous and pious.
Origin of Maharaj Prithu
According to the scriptures, there was a king named Anga in the dynasty of Dhruvaji, who was extremely religious and a devotee of God. His son Ven was crowned, but Ven became a very cruel and ungodly ruler. He banned sacrifices, donations, offerings and religious activities, due to which unrest spread throughout the kingdom.
The sages tried to persuade Ven a lot, but when he was not ready to give up ungodliness, he ended up with a curse from the sages. The kingdom became unstable without a ruler and the scourge of thieves and robbers increased. After that, the sages churned Ven's arms, from which a divine couple appeared. Maharaj Prithu in male form and Maharani Archi in female form appeared. The sages established Prithu as the king of the entire earth.
Protection of the Earth and Establishment of Food
During the time of Maharaj Prithu, there was a shortage of food and medicines on the earth. The people were suffering from hunger and sorrow. When Prithu discovered the reason for this situation, it was found that Prithvidevi had absorbed all the medicines and grains within herself.
Maharaj Prithu ran after Prithvidevi with a bow and arrow. Frightened, Prithvi assumed the form of a cow and finally took refuge in the king. Prithvi requested that if the earth was properly protected and managed, it would again provide food and medicines. After that, Maharaj Prithu leveled the mountains, made the rivers and land well-organized and started agriculture and settlements.
The first organized king of the earth
Maharaj Prithu is considered the first king of the earth because he gave an organized way of life to human society. He built villages, cities, states, animal shelters and military camps.
The modern urban planning and governance system is believed to have started during the time of Maharaja Prithu. He provided justice, security and prosperity to the people by following the principles of the state.
Ashvamedha Yajna and an incident with Indra
Maharaj Prithu resolved to perform 100 Ashvamedha Yajna to get the darshan of God. He successfully completed 99 yagnas, but Devraj Indra feared that if Prithu completed 100 yagnas, his Indrasana would be in danger.
During the 100th yagna, Indra stole the yagna horse. On this occasion, Brahmaji explained to Maharaj Prithu that God can be attained not only through yagnas but also through love and devotion. After that, Prithu abandoned the resolve of the final yagna and had the darshan of Lord Vishnu.
The darshan of Lord Vishnu
Lord Vishnu was extremely pleased with Maharaj Prithu's devotion and gave him darshan. When God asked Prithu to ask for a boon, Prithu expressed his desire not for glory or wealth, but for more power to listen to the story of God and to serve the feet of God in Vaikuntha.
Seeing Maharaj Prithu's unwavering devotion, Lord Vishnu was extremely pleased and bestowed divine grace on him. This incident is considered a wonderful example of devotion and dedication.
Maharaj Prithu's family
Maharaj Prithu was born from the churning of the arms of King Ven. His wife Maharani Archi is considered to be an incarnation of Goddess Lakshmi.
According to the Srimad Bhagavatam, Maharaj Prithu and Maharani Archi had five sons — Vijitashva, Dhumrakesh, Haryaksha, Dravina and Vriksha. The entire family was steadfast in religion and devotion.
