Who is Lord Gajanan?
Lord Gajanan is described as the fourth incarnation of Lord Ganesha in the Ashta Vinayaka incarnations. According to the Mudgala Purana, this incarnation is considered to be the bearer of "Sankhya Brahman" and the symbol of knowledge and wisdom. The word "Gajanan" means "one with an elephant-like face". This form of Lord Ganesha inspires devotees to follow the path of self-knowledge, wisdom and religion. For the practitioners of Samkhya Yoga, the Gajanan incarnation is considered to be particularly fulfilling.
The incarnation of Lord Gajanan was manifested to suppress the demon named Lobhasura. Lobhasura symbolizes greed, lust for excessive wealth, selfishness and material attachment in human life. Lord Gajanan showed that when a person abandons religion and truth due to greed, then destruction is certain. Only through knowledge, contentment and devotion can one overcome greed.
Origin of Lobhasura
As narrated in the Mudgala Purana, once Kubera, the god of wealth, reached Kailash to see Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. There, he gazed at the divine and supernatural beauty of Goddess Parvati with a greedy gaze. Goddess Parvati became angry with this behavior. Out of this greed and attachment that arose in Kubera's mind, a powerful demon was born, who came to be known as Lobhasura.
Lobhasura was extremely brave and ambitious since childhood. He accepted the demon teacher Shukracharya as his guru. Shukracharya initiated him into the five-letter mantra of Lord Shiva "Namah Shivay" and advised him to perform severe penance.
Lobhasur's penance and boon
Lobhasur performed severe penance of Lord Shiva for thousands of years. He kept fasting and kept chanting the mantra of Lord Shiva continuously. Pleased with his unwavering devotion, Lord Shiva appeared before him and gave him the boon of being fearless everywhere. After receiving this boon, Lobhasur's strength increased manifold.
Due to the influence of the boon, Lobhasur became extremely arrogant. He gathered a huge army of demons and conquered the entire earth. After that, he invaded heaven. Even the king of gods, Indra and other gods, could not stand against him. Lobhasur gradually established his dominance in all three worlds.
The Terror of Lobhasur
During Lobhasur's reign, the traditions of religion, sacrifice, Vedas and morality began to be destroyed. Rishis, sages and Brahmins were persecuted. In place of truth, kindness and religion, the kingdom of selfishness and greed was established. The gods lost their place and unrest spread throughout the universe.
Due to the boon of Lord Shiva, the gods, Lord Vishnu and even Mahadev himself could not directly defeat him. As a result, the entire community of gods was plunged into serious anxiety.
Prayer of the gods
The gods and sages, suffering from the atrocities of Lobhasur, took refuge in the sage Raimya. He advised the gods to worship Lord Ganesha. The gods performed severe penance and worshipped Ganesha for a long time. Pleased with their devotion, Lord Ganesha appeared in the form of Gajanan.
Lord Gajanan assured the gods that he would end the terror of Lobhasur and restore religion. The divine vision of the Lord instilled new hope and enthusiasm in the gods.
Lord Gajanan and Lobhasur
Lord Gajanan decided to give Lobhasur a chance to reform before fighting directly. Lord Shiva himself went to Lobhasur as the messenger of Lord Gajanan. He explained the importance of the Ganesha element to Lobhasur and gave the message that he should either accept the surrender of Lord Gajanan or be ready for war.
Lobhasur consulted his guru Shukracharya. Shukracharya explained to him that Lord Ganesha is the form of Parambrahman and it is impossible to win against him. The guru's teachings changed Lobhasur's mind. He realized the mistake of his ego and greed.
Finally, Lobhasur surrendered to Lord Gajanan and praised him. Lord Gajanan was surrendered and compassionate. He forgave Lobhasur, taught him to follow the path of religion and freed the gods from his terror. In this way, peace and religion were re-established in the three worlds.
Spiritual Significance of Gajanan Avatar
The main message of Gajanan Avatar is to conquer greed. Greed never allows a human being to feel satisfied. The endless desire for wealth, power and material pleasures can lead a person to the path of unrighteousness. Lobhasura is the symbol of this mental state.
