Who is Vakratunda Ganesha?
Vakratunda is considered the first and most important incarnation of Lord Ganesha in the Ashta Vinayaka. "Vakrat" means crooked and "tund" means trunk, hence Vakratunda means "one with a crooked trunk". According to the Mudgal Purana, Lord Ganesha defeated a powerful demon named Matsarasur by assuming this incarnation. The Vakratunda form represents the Brahman form and omnipotent element of Lord Ganesha. The main purpose of this incarnation was to establish religion by destroying negative tendencies like jealousy, hatred, ego and envy.
Among all the incarnations of Ashta Vinayaka, Vakratunda is given the first place because it gives the message of victory over the biggest internal enemy of human life, i.e. "Matsara" (jealousy). The form of Lord Vakratunda leads the devotees to knowledge, humility, self-control and spiritual awakening. This incarnation has special significance in the Hindu tradition and Ganesha devotees worship him as the destroyer of obstacles and the protector of religion.
Origin of Matsarasur
As narrated in the Mudgal Purana, a power named Matsara was born from the arrogance and arrogance of the god Indra, who later became famous as Matsarasur. Matsarasur took initiation into the Panchakshari Mantra from the demon guru Shukracharya and performed severe penance of Lord Shiva. Pleased with his penance, Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati granted him such a boon that he would not be afraid of anyone.
After receiving the boon, Matsarasur became extremely arrogant and cruel. The demon guru Shukracharya declared him the king of demons. After that, he conquered the earth, the underworld and the heavens. After defeating the gods, he took away the kingdom of Indra. After that, he also attacked Kailash and Vaikuntha. The entire universe was distressed by the terror of Matsarasura.
Prayer of the gods and the incarnation of Vakratunda
The gods, suffering from the increasing atrocities of Matsarasura, went to Brahmaji and Lord Vishnu Mahadev. Lord Shiva fought against Matsarasura, but due to the boon he had given, he could not defeat him. When the gods became discouraged, Lord Dattatreya preached to them the monosyllable mantra "Ga" of Lord Vakratunda.
The gods, sages and Lord Shiva also worshipped Lord Vakratunda by chanting this mantra. Pleased with their devotion, Lord Ganesha appeared in the form of Vakratunda. His divine form was radiant and he was riding a lion. The Lord assured the gods that he would destroy the pride of Matsarasura and restore religion.
War with Matsarasura
With the remembrance of Lord Vakratunda, an innumerable divine army of Ganas gathered. Then a fierce battle began between Matsarasura and Lord Vakratunda. In this battle that lasted for five days, both the sides showed extraordinary prowess. During the battle, two powerful Ganas of Lord Vakratunda killed the sons of Matsarasura – Sundarapriya and Vishapriya.
After the death of his sons, Matsarasur's morale was broken. He realized that it was impossible to win against Lord Vakratunda. Finally, he gave up his ego and surrendered at the feet of the Lord. Lord Vakratunda was kind and compassionate. He forgave Matsarasur, offered his devotion and returned his kingdom to the gods. In this way, peace and religion were established again among the three people.
Worship of Vakratunda and Brahmaji
Another story is also found in the Puranas that after the flood, when Brahmaji wanted to create a new world, many obstacles arose. Then Brahmaji performed severe penance by chanting the six-letter mantra of Lord Vakratunda "Vakratunday Hoon". Lord Vakrantud appeared before him and gave him the necessary power and blessings to create the universe. After that, Brahma was able to successfully create the universe.
The form and symbolic significance of Vakrantud
In the Vakrantud incarnation, Lord Ganesha's twisted trunk symbolizes infinite knowledge and divine intelligence. His vehicle is the lion, which represents strength, courage, confidence and the victorious power of religion. Usually, Lord Ganesha's vehicle is a mouse, but in this incarnation, the lion shows that he was specially manifested to destroy unrighteousness and ego.
