Who is Lord Mahodar?
Lord Mahodar is described as the third incarnation of Lord Ganesha in the Ashta Vinayaka incarnations. According to the Mudgala Purana, this incarnation is considered to be the symbol and illuminator of "Knowledge-Brahman". The word "Mahodar" means "one with a huge belly". This form of Lord Ganesha represents infinite knowledge, wisdom, forgiveness and spiritual prosperity. In the form of Mahodar, Lord Ganesha shows that true knowledge frees a person from delusion, ignorance and attachment and leads him to the path of religion and truth.
The main purpose of the Mahodar incarnation was to destroy the ego and delusion of the demon named Mohasura. Mohasura was not just a demon, but a symbol of delusion, attachment, illusion and ignorance in human life. Lord Mahodar defeated Mohasura through his divine knowledge and re-established religion and truth in the world.
The Story of Kamdev and Lord Mahodar
In ancient times, a powerful demon named Tarakasur became undefeated in all three worlds due to the boon of Lord Brahma. The gods and sages were extremely saddened by his terror. They worshipped Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati fiercely, but at that time Lord Shiva was in deep trance. Then Mother Parvati tried to break Shiva's trance by assuming the form of a Bhil woman.
When Lord Shiva looked at Parvati, who had come in the form of a Bhil, she disappeared. At that moment, lust manifested itself in Lord Shiva's heart. Understanding this inner state of his, Lord Shiva cursed Kamdev and reduced him to ashes. To get rid of the curse, Kamadeva worshipped the Mahodar form of Lord Ganesha.
Pleased with Kamadeva's devotion, Lord Mahodar appeared and said that he could not completely remove Shiva's curse, but he could give him a new status and divine work. Lord Mahodar blessed Kamadeva that he would reside in youth, beauty, spring season, fragrant flowers, music, sandalwood, gentle breeze and feelings of love. He further blessed that in the future he would be born as Pradyumna, the son of Lord Krishna.
The incident of Kartikeya and Tarakasur
Lord Kartikeya also once worshipped the Mahodar form of Lord Ganesha. Pleased with his devotion, Lord Mahodar blessed him that he would be the one to kill Tarakasur in the future. As described in the Puranas, Lord Kartikeya finally killed Tarakasur and freed the gods from his terror.
Origin of Mohasura
According to the Mudgal Purana, an asura named Mohasura received education from the demon teacher Shukracharya and then began to worship Lord Surya harshly. Pleased with his penance, Suryadev granted him a boon of a healthy life and victory everywhere. As soon as he received the boon, Mohasura became extremely powerful and arrogant.
Mohasura established his dominance over the earth, heaven and many worlds. The gods, sages and nobles were forced to hide in mountains, forests and caves due to his fear. During this time, he married Madira, the daughter of Pramadasur. Gradually, religion, sacrifices, the Vedas and the Varnashrama system began to disappear. The entire creation was immersed in the darkness of delusion and ignorance.
Prayer of the Gods
The gods, distressed by the terror of Mohasura, took refuge in Lord Surya. Surya advised them to worship him through the monosyllable mantra of Lord Ganesha. The gods, sages and sadhaks together started worshipping Lord Mahodar. Pleased with the long-lasting worship, Lord Mahodar appeared and assured the gods that he would put an end to the terror of Mohasura.
Lord Mahodar and Mohasura
Lord Mahodar mounted his mouse vehicle and set off towards Mohasura. Devarshi Narad informed Mohasura about the arrival of Lord Mahodar and described his glory. Lord Vishnu also explained to Mohasura that Lord Mahodar himself is the form of Parambrahman and surrendering to him is the path to welfare.
Hearing these things, Mohasura's ego slowly started melting. He realized that it was impossible to wage war against Lord Mahodar. Finally, he decided to accept the surrender of Lord Mahodar. At the invitation of Lord Vishnu, Lord Mahodar reached Mohasura's city, where Mohasura worshipped him with devotion and resolved to follow all his orders.
Lord Mahodar forgave Mohasura and advised him to follow the path of religion. In this way, Mohasura's heart changed and his terror ended. The gods regained their place, the sages began to perform sacrifices and penances again, and religion and peace were restored throughout the universe.

The incarnation of Lord Mahodara gives the message of overcoming the "delusion" in human life. Delusion means attachment, illusion, ignorance and false identity.
