Who is Lord Lambodar?
Lord Lambodar is described as the fifth avatar of Lord Ganesha in the Ashta Vinayaka avatars. According to the Mudgala Purana, this avatar is considered to be the bearer of "Shakti-Brahma". The word "Lambodar" means "one with a huge belly". This form of Lord Ganesha holds the entire universe in his belly and represents the supreme principle of creation, maintenance and destruction of the universe.
The main purpose of the Lambodar avatar was to destroy the ego and anger of the demon Krodhasura. Krodhasura is considered to be a symbol of anger, passion, hatred and excessive ego in human life. Lord Lambodar showed that anger and ego can destroy all the virtues of a person, while patience, knowledge and self-control lead a person to ultimate peace.
Origin of Krodhasura
As narrated in the Mudgala Purana, once Lord Vishnu enchanted the gods and demons with his Mohini form. Lord Shiva was also momentarily enchanted by this divine pastime. When Lord Vishnu returned to his original form, Lord Shiva realized his situation and became very sad. At that time, a mighty man was born from his radiance, who later came to be known as "Krodhasura".
Krodhasura's body was dark and his eyes were as bright as fire. From childhood, he had extraordinary strength and prowess. The demon guru Shukracharya gave him the knowledge of the demonic tradition and explained the secrets of religion, unrighteousness and power.
Worship and boons of Suryadev
Krodhasura expressed his desire to conquer the entire universe before his guru. Shukracharya initiated him into the Surya mantra and advised him to perform severe penance. Krodhasur went to the forest and continued to perform penance for thousands of years standing on one leg. He did not care about conditions like heat, rain and cold.
Finally, Suryadev was pleased with his penance and asked him to ask for a boon. Krodhasur asked for immortality, victory over the entire universe, health and undefeated power. Suryadev granted him all these blessings as promised. After receiving this boon, Krodhasur became extremely powerful and arrogant.
The Terror of Krodhasur
Krodhasura conquered the earth with his huge demon army. After that, he also attacked Devalok, Vaikuntha and Kailash. The gods could not withstand his prowess. Even Lord Surya could not stop him due to the boon he had given and left his people with a sad heart.
During Krodhasur's reign, religion, sacrifices, good deeds and the observance of the Vedas almost stopped. The gods, sages and gentlemen became victims of his fear. An empire of unrest and unrighteousness was established in the entire universe.
Prayers of the gods
The gods and sages, distressed by the atrocities of Krodhasur, started praising Lord Ganesha. Pleased by their prayers, Lord Lambodar appeared. He assured the gods that he would destroy Krodhasur's ego and restore religion.
This pledge of Lord Lambodar reached Krodhasur through the sky. Hearing this message, he was momentarily frightened, but with the encouragement of his soldiers, he started preparing for the war.
Battle of Lord Lambodar and Krodhasur
When Krodhasur reached the battlefield, he saw Lord Lambodar riding on a mouse vehicle. His big mouth, three eyes and huge belly were shining with amazing brilliance. A divine serpent was wrapped around his navel. Seeing this divine form of God, Krodhasur was momentarily amazed.
Then a terrible war began. Lord Lambodar and the army of gods together destroyed the huge army of Krodhasur. Innumerable demon warriors were defeated in the battle. Krodhasur became extremely angry and started challenging Lord Lambodar to a battle.
Theoretical knowledge given by Lambodar
Lord Lambodar told Krodhasur that he had destroyed religion by misusing the boon of Suryadev and now his unrighteousness was certain. He explained that he was Brahman, the supreme bliss beyond mind and speech, and was pervading the entire universe.
Krodhasura asked the Lord that if he was the birthless Supreme Brahman, then how could he see him? Then Lord Lambodar explained deep philosophical knowledge. He said that Siddhi resides in his left side and Buddhi resides in his right side. The entire universe functions through Siddhi and Intellect. The Lord of both is the Lord Himself.
The Lord further said that the entire universe is situated in His womb. The creation originates from Him, is nurtured in Him and finally merges in Him. For this reason, He is famous as "Lambodar".
Krodhasura's Surrender
After listening to the divine teachings and philosophical knowledge of Lord Lambodar, all the doubts of Krodhasur were dispelled. He realized that Lord Lambodar himself was the form of Parambrahman. He immediately gave up his ego and anger and surrendered at the feet of the Lord.
Lord Lambodar forgave him and advised him to follow the path of religion. Then Krodhasura went to the underworld and the gods regained their place. Peace, religion and happiness were restored throughout the universe.
Spiritual significance of Lambodar Avatar
Lambodar Avatar gives the message of overcoming anger and ego in human life. Anger destroys the conscience of man and leads him to the path of unrighteousness. Krodhasura is the symbol of this destructive spirit.
Lord Lambodar teaches that anger can be controlled only through self-knowledge, patience and forgiveness. The person who conquers his mind, is the one who truly becomes successful in life.
Importance of Worshiping Lord Lambodar
Lord Lambodar is worshipped to remove anger, ego, passion and mental instability. Devotees believe that by his grace, patience, wisdom, self-control and inner peace are attained. This form is considered especially beneficial for spiritual seekers.
