Who is Lord Ekdant?
Lord Ekdant is considered the second and most important incarnation of Lord Ganesha among the eight Vinayaka incarnations. According to the Mudgala Purana, this incarnation is a manifestation of the "Dehi Brahman" form of Lord Ganesha. The word "Ekdant" means "one who has one tooth". In Hinduism, this form is worshipped as a symbol of knowledge, renunciation, self-control and the ultimate truth. Lord Ekdant's vehicle is a mouse and he has four arms and wears a sling, a lotus, and abhaya mudra.
According to the Mudgala Purana, Lord Ekdant defeated a powerful demon named Madasura. Madasura is considered to be a symbol of "Mad" i.e. ego, arrogance and intoxication of power. The story of Lord Ekdanta teaches us that no matter how powerful the ego is, it ultimately has to bow down before divine knowledge and truth.
Origin of Madasura
According to the Mudgal Purana, "Mad" was born from the radiance of Maharishi Chyavan. On the orders of his father, Mad went to the demon guru Shukracharya and requested to accept him as his guru. Mad's ambition was to establish his rule over the entire universe. Shukracharya initiated him into the monosyllable "Hri" mantra and advised him to perform severe penance.
Mad performed severe penance for thousands of years. Pleased with his penance, the lion-carrying Goddess Bhagwati appeared before him. With the blessings of the goddess, he received a boon of healthy life, undefeated power and the power to rule the entire universe. After receiving the boon, Mad became famous as "Madasur". He married Pramadasur's daughter Salsa and had three sons named Vilasi, Lolup and Dhanpriya.
The Terror of Madasura
Due to the influence of the boon, Madasura became extremely powerful and arrogant. He conquered the earth, heaven and Kailash. Gradually, the rule of the demons was established over the entire universe. Yajna, Havan, Swaha, Swadha and religious rituals almost disappeared. The gods lost their place and darkness and injustice spread throughout the universe.
The gods took refuge in the great sage Sanatkumar to get relief from this crisis. Sanatkumar taught them the one-syllable mantra of Lord Ganesha and advised them to worship the form of Ekdant.
The divine form of Lord Ekdant
Sanatakumar made the gods meditate on the form of Lord Ekdant and told them that he has one tooth, four arms, a face like an elephant and is a lamb. He is seated on a mouse and with him resides Siddhi and Buddhi. In his hands are a noose, a parashu, a lotus and an abhaya mudra. His face is always happy and he is the giver of boons to the devotees and the destroyer of the wicked.
The secret of the name Ekdant
The gods asked Sanatkumar why the Lord is called "Ekdant"? Then he explained that the word "Ek" is a symbol of Maya and "Dant" is a symbol of the Supreme Power or the Supreme Soul. Lord Ganesha, despite being the possessor of Maya, is Himself situated in the form of the Supreme Soul. That is why He is called "Ekdant". This name indicates the knowledge of the Lord and His relationship with the Supreme Truth.
Incarnation of Lord Ekdant
The gods worshipped Lord Ganesha for about a hundred years. Pleased with their devotion, Lord Ekdant appeared and asked the gods to ask for a boon. The gods prayed for deliverance from the terror of Madasura. Lord Ekdant assured them that He would end injustice and restore their kingdom to the gods.
War with Madasura
When Madasura came to know about the arrival of Lord Ekdanta, he became extremely angry and set out for war with his huge army of demons. The demons were amazed to see the divine form of Lord Ekdanta. He was riding on a mouse-like vehicle and had divine weapons in his hands.
Lord Ekdanta sent a message to Madasura that if he returned his kingdom to the gods and renounced hatred and took refuge in the Lord, he would be forgiven. But Madasura, full of ego, chose war. He tried to attack the Lord, but Lord Ekdanta's arrow struck him in the chest. He fell to the ground and became unconscious.
After a while, when he came to his senses, he realized that Lord Ekdanta was not an ordinary deity but was the Supreme Brahman Himself. He immediately renounced his ego and surrendered at the feet of the Lord. Lord Ekdanta forgave him and blessed him with devotion. After that, Madasura went to the underworld and the gods got their kingdom back.
The Story of Ganasura and Chintamani
According to another story in the Puranas, Lord Vishnu also worshipped Lord Ekdanta. Pleased with his devotion, Lord Ekdanta gave him the divine Chintamani gem. Lord Vishnu gifted that gem to Maharishi Kapila. Later, an asura named Ganasura snatched that Chintamani from Kapila Muni. Then Lord Ekdanta killed Ganasura and retrieved the Chintamani and returned it to Kapil Muni.
Spiritual Significance of Ekdanta Avatar
The Ekdanta Avatar gives the message of overcoming the faults of ego, arrogance and drunkenness in human life. Madasura was not just a demon, but was a symbol of the ego in the human mind. Lord Ekdanta teaches the devotees that true success in life can be achieved only through knowledge, devotion and humility. A person who renounces ego and adopts the path of religion and truth, only he becomes spiritually prosperous.
Importance of Worshiping Ekdanta
Lord Ekdanta is worshipped for intelligence, knowledge, self-control and destruction of ego. This form is considered especially venerable for students, seekers and those following the spiritual path. Devotees believe that by the grace of Lord Ekdant, obstacles in life are removed and good intellect is attained.
Conclusion
Lord Ekdant is the second and most important form of Lord Ganesha in the Ashta Vinayaka Avatars. By defeating Madasura, he taught the world that the end of ego and arrogance is certain, while devotion, knowledge and humility are eternal. The form of Lord Ekdant inspires devotees towards self-knowledge, righteousness and spiritual development.
