Who is Lord Dhumravarna?
Lord Dhumravarna is described as the eighth and final main avatar of Lord Ganesha in the Ashta Vinayaka avatars. According to the Mudgala Purana, this form represents "Shiva-Brahma". The word "Dhumravarna" means one who is smoky or grey in colour. In this form, Lord Ganesha manifests as the destroyer of ego, pride and self-delusion. He teaches his devotees that it is very important to maintain humility even after attaining power, knowledge, wealth and success.

During these thoughts, Suryadev suddenly sneezed and a huge, bright and powerful man emerged from it. He went ahead and became famous as "Aham" or "Ahantasur". To find the meaning of his existence, he approached the demon guru Shukracharya. Shukracharya realized through meditation that he was born from the feeling of ego and advised him to gain strength through penance.
Ganesh Worship and Boon
Shukracharya initiated Ahantasur into the powerful mantra of Lord Ganesha. After that, Ahantasur went to the forest and performed severe penance for thousands of years. He continuously meditated on Lord Ganesha without caring about heat, cold and rain.
Finally, Lord Ganesha appeared, pleased with his devotion. The divine form of the Lord was radiant with the radiance of the Gajmukh, Ekdant, Trinetra and Chaturbhuj forms. Ahantasur asked the Lord for devotion, invincible power, infallible weapons and the ability to rule the entire universe. The Lord, pleased with his penance, granted him this boon.
Ahantasur's Empire
After receiving the boon, Ahantasur became more powerful. The demon guru Shukracharya established him as the king of the Asuras. A huge city was built for him and then he was married to a girl named Mamata. Over time, he had two sons named Garva and Shrestha.
After gaining power and glory, Ahantasur decided to conquer the entire universe. He invaded the earth, the underworld and the sky and took all the worlds under his control. The gods, sages and pious people were forced to hide in the mountains and caves out of fear of him.

During Ahantasur's reign, injustice began to spread rapidly. Sacrifices, religious rituals and Vedic traditions were disrupted. Temples were desecrated and people became more and more selfish and self-centered. Ahantasura considered himself superior and wanted people to worship him instead of God.
An asura advisor explained to him that the power of the gods increases through sacrifices and religion. Therefore, he ordered the destruction of sacrifices and religious activities. As a result, unrest, injustice and misery increased in the entire society.
Prayer of the Gods
When the situation became unbearable, the gods, sages and sages took refuge in Brahmaji. Brahmaji explained that Ahantasura had got his power through the boon of Lord Ganesha, so only Lord Ganesha could save him. Then all the gods worshipped Lord Ganesha for a long time with a single syllable mantra.
After a hundred years of devotion, Lord Dhumravarna appeared. The gods praised him and prayed for the end of injustice. The Lord assured them that at the right time, he would destroy Ahantasur's ego.

Ahantasur was frightened by this dream, but his courtiers explained to him that dreams were just imagination and did not need to be taken seriously.
After some time, Devarshi Narada came to Ahantasur and advised him to accept the surrender of Lord Dhumravarna. But Ahantasur, blinded by ego, ignored this advice.

Shukracharya explained to him that he had misused the power he had received from the grace of Lord Ganesha and now only surrender to the Lord could save him.
