Jal Jhilani Ekadashi

Introduction:

Jal Jhilani Ekadashi, also known as Parivartini Ekadashi, is observed on the eleventh day (Ekadashi) of the bright fortnight of the Bhadrapada month (August–September). It marks a highly sacred day for devotees of Lord Vishnu and Krishna. On this day, the ritual of "Jal Jhilani" — symbolically swinging or sailing the deity in water — is performed with deep devotion. This Ekadashi falls during Chaturmas, the four holy months when Lord Vishnu is believed to be asleep in the Kshira Sagar (Ocean of Milk).

Mythological Background and Significance:

Lord Krishna’s Boat Festival:
According to scriptures, on this day, Lord Krishna performed a joyful boat ride (Nauka Vihar) with the Gopis on the Yamuna river. In memory of this divine pastime, deities are placed in a boat and taken for a ceremonial sail in water bodies like lakes or temple tanks.

Parivartini Ekadashi:
It is believed that on this day, Lord Vishnu changes his side while resting in the Kshira Sagar during Chaturmas. Hence, it is also called Parivartini (Turning) Ekadashi.

Rituals from Scriptures:
As per the Panchratra Agama texts, Lord Vishnu should be bathed with water from 1001 kalashas (sacred pots). Flowers, new garments, ornaments, and hymns are offered, followed by placing the deity in a boat.

Special Offering of Curd (Dahi):
It is believed Lord Krishna asked for curd from the Gopis during the boat ride. Hence, donating curd on this day is considered extremely auspicious.

Why Is It Celebrated?

Jal Jhilani Ekadashi is observed to please Lord Vishnu and Krishna, to purify the soul, to shed sins, and to gain spiritual merit. It is believed that witnessing the boat procession of the deity and remembering it at the time of death leads to liberation (moksha).

Major Rituals:

Fasting (Upvas):
Devotees undertake a strict fast — ideally Nirjala (without water) or fruit-based fasting.

Jal Jhilani Ceremony:
The deity is placed in a beautifully decorated boat and ceremoniously taken around a waterbody while devotees chant bhajans, kirtans, and hymns.

Night Vigil & Remembrance:
Devotees stay awake at night chanting God's names, engaging in bhakti and katha.

Donation & Worship:
Curd, grains, clothes, and food are donated to the poor, and special aarti is performed.

Importance:

Washes away great sins – as per scriptures, even major sins like falsehood, theft, or violence are absolved by sincerely observing this Ekadashi.
Spiritual upliftment and salvation — remembering this festival at the time of death ensures liberation.
Connection with God — this day strengthens the bhakta-bhagavan relationship through divine pastimes.

Conclusion:

Jal Jhilani Ekadashi is not just a ritual, but a celebration of divine love and surrender. Devotees should observe this day with devotion, fasting, remembrance of Krishna's leela, and heartfelt service. When we hold on to the feet of God and saints, even the symbolic boat becomes the vehicle to cross worldly existence.
