Masik Kalashtami is a sacred observance dedicated to Lord Kalabhairav, a fierce manifestation of Lord Shiva. It is observed every month on the Ashtami Tithi of Krishna Paksha according to the Hindu panchang. Devotees of Lord Bhairav worship Him and many observe fasting on this day.

The word “Masik” means monthly, therefore Masik Kalashtami refers to the monthly Kalashtami that occurs every month during Krishna Paksha Ashtami. It is considered a powerful day for seeking protection, courage and removal of obstacles.

Significance of Masik Kalashtami

On Masik Kalashtami devotees worship Lord Kalabhairav, offer prayers, chant Bhairav mantras and visit temples dedicated to Bhairav. It is believed that sincere worship on this day removes fear, negative influences and difficulties in life.

Kalabhairav Jayanti

The most important Kalashtami is known as Kalabhairav Jayanti. According to the North Indian lunar calendar it falls in the month of Margashirsha, while in the South Indian lunar calendar it occurs in the month of Kartik. However both calendars observe Kalabhairav Jayanti on the same day.

It is believed that Lord Shiva appeared in the form of Kalabhairav on this day. Kalabhairav Jayanti is also known as Bhairav Ashtami.

Kalashtami Fasting Rules

According to traditional texts such as Vratraj, Kalashtami fasting should be observed on the day when Ashtami Tithi prevails during the night. Therefore sometimes the fast might be observed on Saptami Tithi if Ashtami begins after sunset and prevails during the night.

Panchang calculations ensure that Ashtami Tithi prevails for at least one Ghati after Pradosh when determining the correct fasting day.
