According to the Lalita Upakhyana, an asura named Bhandasura gained immense power through his penance and tormented the gods and sages. Then Maa Tripurasundari assumed the form of “Lalita Devi” and led the army of the gods and killed Bhandasura.
In this battle, the goddess had a noose, reins, bow and arrow in her hands, which are considered symbols of control over the mind, senses and willpower. With the divine radiance and power of the goddess, Bhandasura was destroyed and religion and peace were established in the universe again.
