The roots of Labor Day trace back to the labor movement in the United States, particularly the Haymarket affair in Chicago in 1886, where workers protested for an 8-hour workday. By 1890, May 1st was recognized as International Workers’ Day. In India, it was first celebrated in 1923 in Chennai by the Labour Kisan Party.
