World Labor Day

Introduction
World Labor Day, also known as International Workers’ Day or May Day, is celebrated on May 1st every year. It honors the contribution, efforts, and rights of laborers and working-class people around the globe.

History and Origin
The roots of Labor Day trace back to the labor movement in the United States, particularly the Haymarket affair in Chicago in 1886, where workers protested for an 8-hour workday. By 1890, May 1st was recognized as International Workers’ Day. In India, it was first celebrated in 1923 in Chennai by the Labour Kisan Party.

Significance and Purpose
This day raises awareness about labor rights, workplace safety, fair wages, and dignified working conditions. It is a tribute to the backbone of every economy – the workers.

Celebration and Activities
Labor unions and organizations conduct rallies, seminars, and cultural programs. In schools, discussions and essay writing are organized. Some companies also recognize and appreciate their employees' efforts on this day.

Spiritual Message
All work is noble, and labor is a form of service to society and God. A nation progresses only when its workers are respected and supported.
