Overview:
Vat Savitri Vrat is an important Hindu ritual observed by married women for the long life and good health of their husbands. It is mainly celebrated on the Amavasya (new moon day) in the month of Jyestha. In some regions, it begins from Jyestha Shukla Teras and continues until the full moon day. This vrat is especially observed with great devotion and faith in Northern India, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Maharashtra.
The Legend Behind the Festival:
The story of Vat Savitri Vrat is mentioned in the Mahabharata. Savitri was a devoted, intelligent, and virtuous woman who married a young man named Satyavan. Shortly after their marriage, the sages predicted that Satyavan would die soon. To save her husband, Savitri undertook severe penance.
On the day Yamaraj came to take Satyavan’s soul, Savitri followed him to the forest. When Yamaraj began to take her husband's soul, Savitri followed him. Impressed by her devotion, knowledge, and humility, Yamaraj offered her a boon. Savitri cleverly asked for boons that ultimately forced Yamaraj to return Satyavan’s life.
This tale is a remarkable example of a wife’s devotion, faith, and strength.
