Maha Saptami

Introduction to the Festival:
Maha Saptami is the seventh day of the Navratri or Durga Puja festival, celebrated during the Shukla Paksha of the Ashwin month (September–October). It marks the beginning of the main Durga Puja rituals and holds immense religious and spiritual importance in Hindu tradition, especially in West Bengal, Odisha, Assam, and parts of eastern India.

Mythological Significance:
According to Devi Mahatmya, this day symbolizes the beginning of the war between Goddess Durga and the demon Mahishasura. On Maha Saptami, the goddess begins her battle to destroy evil and restore dharma. It is said that the gods invoked her with full devotion on this day and presented her with divine weapons to defeat Mahishasura.

Kola Bou Ritual and Bathing of Navapatrika:
In Bengal, the day begins with the ritual of ‘Pran Pratishtha’, where life is invoked into the idol of the Goddess. A special early morning ritual called Navapatrika Snan (bathing of the banana bride or Kola Bou) is performed. The Navapatrika, which symbolizes the nine forms of the goddess, is bathed in a river or water body, then draped in a saree and placed beside Lord Ganesha, signifying divine energy and fertility.

How It Is Celebrated:
Devotees offer prayers, perform aarti, chant Durga Saptashati, and offer special bhog (food offerings). Temples and pandals are beautifully decorated with lights and flowers. In many regions, especially in Bengal, cultural performances, dhunuchi dance, and community feasts are organized.

Spiritual Importance:
Maha Saptami is a symbol of awakening the inner divine force and confronting negativity with courage. Worshipping Durga on this day blesses the devotee with protection, strength, and wisdom.

Conclusion:
Maha Saptami marks the divine commencement of the victory of good over evil. It is a day to embrace Shakti (power) within and celebrate the mother goddess in all her glory.
