Kamika Ekadashi

Introduction to the Festival:

Kamika Ekadashi falls during the Krishna Paksha (waning phase) of the Shravan month (July–August) in the Hindu calendar. It is a highly auspicious Ekadashi dedicated to Lord Vishnu, observed to seek forgiveness for sins and attain spiritual blessings.

The Story Behind Kamika Ekadashi:

According to legend, a sinful man was advised by a sage to observe Kamika Ekadashi to free himself from his past misdeeds. By sincerely observing the vrat (fast), he attained peace and divine grace from Lord Vishnu, demonstrating the power of faith and devotion.

Why We Celebrate This Festival:

Kamika Ekadashi is celebrated to purify the soul by destroying sins and to seek moksha (liberation). It is believed that observing this Ekadashi grants spiritual cleansing greater than bathing in sacred rivers.

Key Traditions of Kamika Ekadashi:

Early Morning Rituals:
Devotees wake early, take a ritual bath, and begin a strict fast (nirjala – no water or phalahar – fruits only).

Offerings:
Tulsi leaves, flowers, fruits, and incense are offered to Lord Vishnu.

Chanting and Bhajans:
Devotees chant Vishnu Sahasranama and sing devotional songs.

Behavioral Discipline:
Avoid tamasic foods, negative speech, and focus on prayer and meditation.

Breaking the Fast:
The fast is broken (parana) the next day after sunrise.

Significance of the Festival:

  • Believed to cleanse all sins and help attain moksha.

  • Has greater spiritual merit than bathing in holy rivers.

  • Emphasizes faith, devotion, and self-discipline.

  • Encourages moral conduct and spiritual awakening.
