Dvadashi Shraddh

Introduction
Dvadashi Shraddh is observed on the 12th day (Dvadashi Tithi) of the Krishna Paksha during the Pitru Paksha. It is dedicated to performing Shraddh rituals for those ancestors who passed away on this specific lunar date.

Spiritual Importance
In Hindu tradition, each tithi of Pitru Paksha has a designated Shraddh day. Performing Dvadashi Shraddh is believed to bring peace to the souls of the deceased and helps the descendants fulfill their ancestral obligations.

Who Should Perform Dvadashi Shraddh
The Shraddh is performed by the eldest son or a responsible male member of the family for ancestors who died on Dvadashi Tithi. If no male heir is available, other close relatives may also perform the rituals.

Main Rituals and Offerings

  • Tarpan with black sesame seeds, water, and barley

  • Pinda Daan using rice, ghee, and til

  • Offering food to crows, cows, and dogs

  • Feeding Brahmins and giving donations

  • Observing cleanliness and silence during rituals

Scriptural Significance
Texts such as Garuda Purana and Manu Smriti emphasize the importance of Shraddh based on the lunar calendar. Performing the Shraddh on the correct tithi, especially during Pitru Paksha, ensures the liberation of ancestral souls and the well-being of descendants.

Conclusion
Dvadashi Shraddh is a significant act of reverence and duty. It strengthens the bond between the living and the departed and helps in preserving the sanctity of family lineage and traditions.
