Introduction to the Festival:
Bhai Dooj, also known as Bhau Beej, Bhai Tika, or Bhratri Dwitiiya, is an important Hindu festival that symbolizes the affection and love between brothers and sisters. It is celebrated two days after Diwali, on the second day of the Shukla Paksha (bright fortnight) of the Kartik month.
The Legend:
According to a popular mythological belief, Yama, the god of death, and Yamuna, the goddess of the river Yamuna, were siblings. Yamuna repeatedly invited her brother to her home, but Yama was unable to visit due to his duties. Finally, on Kartik Shukla Dwitiiya, Yama visited his sister's home. Yamuna performed a Tilak ceremony, fed him lovingly, and wished for his long life. Pleased by her devotion, Yama granted a boon that any sister who performs the Tilak ceremony on her brother on this day will ensure that her brother lives a long life and will not fear death.
Another story suggests that when Lord Krishna killed the demon Narakasura and returned to Dwarka, his sister Subhadra welcomed him by lighting lamps, applying a Tilak, and feeding him sweets. This tradition is also remembered and celebrated during Bhai Dooj.
Significance of the Festival:
Bhai Dooj strengthens the bond of love, affection, and responsibility between brothers and sisters. On this day, sisters pray for their brothers' long life and prosperity, while brothers vow to protect and support their sisters. The festival further strengthens family relationships.
Major Traditions of the Festival:
Tilak and Aarti: Sisters apply Tilak on their brothers' foreheads, perform Aarti, and pray for their happiness and well-being.
Feasts and Sweets: Brothers and sisters share sweets and meals together, which further strengthens their bond of affection.
Exchange of Gifts: Brothers give gifts to their sisters to express their love and respect.
Moon Worship: Sisters whose brothers live far away or are not present, worship the moon to pray for their brothers' well-being.
Bhai Dooj is a symbol of the unbreakable bond between brothers and sisters and family values. This day teaches us that strengthening family relationships and mutual love brings happiness in life.
