What is Republic Day?
Republic Day is celebrated every year on January 26th to commemorate the adoption of the Constitution of India in 1950. This day marks the moment when India officially became a sovereign, democratic republic, free to govern itself through its own laws and elected representatives.
Historical Background
After gaining independence on August 15, 1947, India still followed the British laws under the Government of India Act, 1935. To create a sovereign legal system, the Constituent Assembly, led by Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, drafted the Indian Constitution, which came into effect on January 26, 1950.
This date was chosen as a tribute to the Declaration of Indian Independence (Purna Swaraj) passed on 26th January 1930.
