Introduction to the Festival:

Kali Chaudas, also known as Narak Chaturdashi, Roop Chaudas, or Chhoti Diwali, is the second day of the grand Diwali festival. It is celebrated on the 14th day of the dark fortnight of the Kartika month. This day is especially observed in South India, Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra, where Goddess Kali or Mahakali is worshipped. It symbolizes the victory of good over evil, self-purification, and liberation from negativity.

The Story Behind Kali Chaudas:

According to the mythological tale, the demon Narakasura had caused terror on Earth and had imprisoned 16,100 young women. Lord Krishna, along with his wife Satyabhama, defeated Narakasura and freed the captive women. This event took place on the 14th day of Kartika's dark fortnight, which is celebrated as Narak Chaturdashi. The occasion is marked by lighting lamps to celebrate the triumph of good over evil.

Why We Celebrate This Festival:

Kali Chaudas is celebrated for self-purification, liberation from evil, and the invocation of positive energy. By worshipping Goddess Kali on this day, devotees pray for freedom from negativity, laziness, and bad thoughts. This festival sends a message of becoming pure and clean, both internally and externally.

Key Traditions of Kali Chaudas:

Abhyang Snan (Oil Bath): Early in the morning, before sunrise, an oil bath is taken to purify oneself and cleanse the sins.

Lighting Lamps (Deepdan): In the evening, lamps are lit for Yama to ward off the fear of untimely death.

Worship of Goddess Kali: In particular, Goddess Kali is worshipped in Gujarat and West Bengal on this day.

Roop Chaudas: In some regions, this day is celebrated as Roop Chaudas, where prayers are offered for beauty and good health.

Significance of the Festival:

Kali Chaudas is a festival that represents self-purification, victory of good over evil, and liberation from negativity.
