Varuthini Ekadashi

Introduction
Varuthini Ekadashi is observed during the Krishna Paksha (waning phase) of the Hindu month of Vaishakha. The term “Varuthini” means “protected” or “armored,” and this Ekadashi is believed to protect devotees from evil, misfortune, and past sins. It is dedicated to Lord Vishnu.

Legend and Historical Significance
As per Padma Purana, King Mandata (or Mandhata) was once cursed due to his sinful deeds. On the advice of a sage, he observed Varuthini Ekadashi with full devotion. As a result, he was absolved of his sins and attained salvation. Lord Krishna narrated the importance of this fast to Yudhishthira in the Mahabharata.

Why is this Ekadashi Celebrated
This Ekadashi is a spiritual opportunity to purify one’s thoughts, actions, and soul. It is believed to bring positive transformation, destroy negative karma, and secure divine blessings for peace and prosperity.

Rituals and Fasting Method
Devotees observe a strict fast—some go for a nirjala (without water) fast—and spend the day in prayers and devotional songs dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Sleeping on the floor, reciting Vishnu Sahasranama, and donating food and clothes to Brahmins on Dwadashi are common practices.

Spiritual Benefits
It is said that observing Varuthini Ekadashi brings the fruits equivalent to thousands of years of austerity. It helps remove sins such as stealing, lying, and disrespect toward elders. It strengthens spiritual resolve and prepares the soul for liberation.
