Sunday
In ancient times there lived an old man. He used to regularly fast on Sundays. On Sunday, after waking up before sunrise, the old woman would retire from the bath and clean the courtyard by wrapping it with cow dung, after that she would worship the Sun God and after listening to the Sunday Vrat Katha, she would offer the Sun God and eat a meal at a time during the day. By the grace of the Sun God, the old man had no worries and troubles. Gradually, his house was filled with wealth and grain.
Seeing the old man happy, his neighbor started to burn with him. The old man did not keep any cow. So she used to bring cow dung tied in the courtyard of her neighbour. The neighbor thought of something and tied his cow inside the house. The old woman could not cover her courtyard due to non-availability of cow dung on Sunday. Because of not being able to reach the courtyard, the old woman did not offer bhog to the Sun God and did not eat food on that day. When the sun set, the old man slept hungry and thirsty.
When the old man's eyes were opened before sunrise in the morning, he was surprised to see a beautiful cow and calf in the courtyard of his house. He tied the cow to the courtyard and quickly fed her with fodder. When the neighbor saw the beautiful cow and calf tied in the courtyard of the old man, he began to burn even more. Then the cow gave dung of gold. The neighbour's eyes welled up when he saw the cow.
When the neighbour did not find the old woman around, she immediately picked up the cow dung and took it to her house and kept the cow dung there. Within a few days, the neighborhood became rich with gold dung. The cow used to make gold dung every day before sunrise and before the old man got up, the neighbor would pick up the dung and take it away.
For a long time the old man did not know anything about the gold dung. The old woman continued to fast every Sunday as before and listened to the story of Lord Surya Dev. But when the Sun God came to know of the cunning of the neighbour, he unleashed a strong storm. Seeing the fury of the storm, the old man tied the cow inside the house. Waking up in the morning, the old man saw the gold dung and was very surprised.
After that day, the old woman started tying the cow inside the house. The old man became very rich in a few days from the dung of gold. As the old woman was rich, the neighbor was badly burned to ashes, and she persuaded her husband and sent him to the king of the city. The king was very happy to see the beautiful cow. When the king saw the gold dung in the morning, he was not surprised.
On the other hand, seeing the Sun God praying to the hungry and thirsty old man in this way, he felt a lot of compassion. That night, the Sun God told the king in a dream, 'Rajan, return the old man's cow and calf immediately, otherwise a mountain of calamities will fall on you. Your castle will be destroyed. The king, terribly frightened by the dream of the Sun God, returned the cow and calf to the old man as soon as he got up in the morning.
The king offered a large sum of money and asked the old man to forgive him for his mistake. The king punished Padosan and her husband for their wickedness. Then the king made a proclamation throughout the kingdom that all men and women should fast on Sunday. By fasting on Sunday, the houses of all the people were filled with wealth and grain, happiness was spread all around in the kingdom. Men and women began to lead happy lives and the physical sufferings of all people were also removed.
